David Phillips
R4,125 Discovery Miles 41 250 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Edward Aitken-Davies (1899-1981) served as an Education Control Officer in the British Zone of occupied Germany from the early summer of 1945 until December 1949. He thus experienced the implementation of policy in the Zone from the very beginnings of the occupation until the founding of the Federal Republic of German y in 1949. During the period 1945 to 1947 he wrote weekly letters home to his mother. Those letters, together with the many speeches he gave in Germany during his time as a leading British officer in the Hanover region have not hitherto been available to researchers but can now be made accessible in edited form. The letters are placed in the context of developments in British policy and with explanatory notes on the detail. Taken together, his letters and other documents provide insights into the day-to-day lives of the impressive group of individuals who oversaw the development of education in Germany from post-war chaos to the reform and stability which restored the education system of the country to a pre-eminent status in Europe.

David Phillips
R166 Discovery Miles 1 660 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The aim of this series is to appeal to readers of all ages, perhaps for different reasons...In this volume: We travel back to the year 1965 For the younger reader there are wonderful pictures of trains, real trains. There will, for example, be tank engines, steam engines, electric trains and multiple units and many more varieties besides! Some will be recognised from train sets, model railways and books, while others will be seen for the first time. For the older reader the books are designed to build into a collection placing the railway in the context of key events thus providing an historical perspective of travel in times past. For those old enough to remember the years depicted, the series will, we hope, provide reminders for many of school days, time perhaps spent train-spotting, shed bashing and generally gricing! The books also make ideal theme gifts for the year of birth, marriage, retirement, starting work and other such events in life.

Quality of Life - Concept, Policy and Practice (Paperback): David Phillips Quality of Life - Concept, Policy and Practice (Paperback)
David Phillips
R1,688 Discovery Miles 16 880 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Quality of life is one of the most important issues facing the world today and is central to the development of social policy. Very little, however, has been written on this crucial topic. "Quality of Life "explores two key questions: which societies offer the best quality of life and how can we enhance it globally?
This innovative book discusses the criteria by which we can judge attempts to raise quality of life, thinking about concerns such as the satisfaction of basic and social needs, autonomy to enjoy life and social connectivity, and considers topics such as:
- individual well-being and health related quality of life
- human needs - what makes us happy
- poverty and social exclusion within communities
- social solidarity, altruism and trust within communities.
"Quality of Life" is the first systematic presentation of this subject from both individual and collective perspectives. It provides a powerful overview of a concept which is becoming increasingly prominent in the social sciences and is essential reading for students of social policy, sociology and health studies.

Quality of Life - Concept, Policy and Practice (Hardcover, New): David Phillips Quality of Life - Concept, Policy and Practice (Hardcover, New)
David Phillips
R3,986 Discovery Miles 39 860 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Examining the concept of quality of life, the book looks at its relevance to social policy, especially in relation to class, gender, health and cultural diversity. The book explores subjective and objective individual well-being and family, community and social life. Quality of Life is related to other contemporary concepts such as social capital, social inclusion and health inequality and set in an international and global perspective. It draws on a range of disciplines to bring a sense of wholeness to a subject which has many disparate elements and which has been treated in the past in fragmentary ways. Overall, it provides the student with a powerful overview of a concept, which is becoming increasingly prominent in the social sciences. Quality of Life is a central theme in the study and practice of social policy, but there is very little on the subject written from a social policy perspective. Addressing issues that are dealt with in most mainstream social policy modules the book covers: poverty, social exclusion, health and social divisions and is a welcome addition to the current literature.

Chemistry of the f-Block Elements (Hardcover): Helen C. Aspinall Chemistry of the f-Block Elements (Hardcover)
Helen C. Aspinall; Series edited by David Phillips
R3,539 Discovery Miles 35 390 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The first f-block elements were discovered in the 18th and 19th centuries, since the advent of the cyclotron many more of them have been isolated. The applications of these elements range from smoke detectors to catalytic converters and they are used widely in industry, for example, in the refining of oil and the manufacture of glass and ceramics.;This systematic introduction to the chemistry of the lanthanide and actinide elements illustrates the main features of f-block chemistry and the important applications of the elements and their compounds. Details and references from research are included. Aimed at advanced undergraduate students learning about this area of inorganic chemistry, this book provides a detailed introduction to the topic. The book should also act as a useful reader for first year postgraduate students and researchers, particularly those from a non-inorganic chemistry background, requiring an overview of the area.

Sol-Gel Materials - Chemistry and Applications (Hardcover): Paul O'Brien Sol-Gel Materials - Chemistry and Applications (Hardcover)
Paul O'Brien; John D. Wright, Nico A.J.M. Sommerdijk; Series edited by David Phillips, Stanley Roberts
R2,595 Discovery Miles 25 950 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Sol-Gel processing methods, first used historically for decorative and constructional materials, were extensively developed in the last century for applications such as glasses, ceramics, catalysts, coatings, composites and fibres. Today they are reaching their full potential, enabling the preparation of new generations of advanced materials not easily accessible by other methods yet using mild, low-energy conditions. The topic is therefore increasingly included in advanced undergraduate, MSc and PhD programmes in the areas of chemistry, physics and materials science. This concise introductory text, written at the advanced undergraduate/first-year postgraduate level, is also suitable as an introduction to the development, mechanisms, chemistry, characterisation methods and applications of the technique. It provides readers with an extensive yet concise grounding in the theory of each area of the subject and details the real and potential applications and the future prospects of sol-gel chemistry.

Health and Development (Hardcover): David Phillips, Yola Verhasselt Health and Development (Hardcover)
David Phillips, Yola Verhasselt
R4,012 Discovery Miles 40 120 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Health and Development presents a broad and detailed description of the multifaceted aspects of health and development across the globe. People are living longer, their lifestyles are changing and so too are the diseases from which they suffer. Recession in the North and debt servicing in the South have reduced public expenditure on health and welfare. The links between regional, economic and environmental factors and the health of a population are becoming clearer. Does development mean a longer life of lower quality? Always alive to both the global and the local implications, the authors focus in particular on the critical issues surrounding environmental impact, the interaction of poverty and health, socio-cultural factors in HIV/AIDS transmission, the use of traditional and community health care resources and women's health.

Richard Adams, Christine Owen, Cameron Scott, David Phillip Parsons
R4,425 Discovery Miles 44 250 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book will advance the understanding of leadership beyond the inherited myths and modalities of command and control. Leadership is separated from ideas and institutional seniority and explained as the collaborative power of one with others. Enabling the intelligent co-participation of all people, the constructive effect of this approach to leadership is in the engagement of people. This is significant when task accomplishment depends not on managerial direction, but on the interaction of people with each other, with technical systems, and with complex regulations which are often across jurisdictional boundaries. Examples and case studies are included.

Education in Germany - Tradition and Reform in Historical Context (Hardcover): David Phillips Education in Germany - Tradition and Reform in Historical Context (Hardcover)
David Phillips
R4,604 Discovery Miles 46 040 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The German education and training system has been the subject of considerable attention from other nations, and has often been used as a model for other systems. As a federal republic, responsibility for educational matters is devolved to the state parliaments, giving the system a degree of autonomy which does not exist in countries with centralized education systems. In order to fully examine the reasons behind the traditional success of the German system, and the implications this has for the future, David Phillips brings together articles from some of the best known names in the field, including Mitter, Glowka, Hearnden, Fuhr, Robinson and Prais and Wagner.
The book is organized into four parts. Part One examines the historical inheritance of the present education system; Part Two covers standards and assessment and Part Three discusses vocational education and training, an area of the German education system which has received much admiration. Finally, Part Four addresses questionsabout the future of the current education system in a unified Germany.
